The word »Naturschätzen« means to esteem the nature in its purest form, and can also be understood as treasures of the nature. Munich citizens tend to enthuse about their city. But do they also know the environment and which precious places the surroundings of Munich have to offer and their meaning to life and nature? »Naturschätzen« is a concept comprising a book, poster series and a corporate identity which aims to show the physiographic features of the surroundings of cities, in this case for Munich.

The selection of the region Munich was followed by a detailed research and concept phase. Subsequently, contentual levels were sorted, structured and the storytelling principle was developed. The book comprises 5 chapters and approaches the topic in a variety of perspectives. One part covers the mathematics in nature, also taking a deeper look into the growth of plants. Inspired by the nature, the design concept of the book is based on the Fibonacci numbers. Chapter 2 covers the origin of the landscape in the region of Munich. The main chapter addresses the different habitats wood, water and swamp in the surroundings of Munich as well as special places which the reader should be incentivized to visit. Pages which interrupt visually tell enjoyable stories about the region. Chapter 4 is an excursion with an article about how mankind treats the environment. The last chapter concludes the book with photographic impressions of the environment of Munich.

The brand »Naturschätzen« serves as umbrella brand for different media. Within there are publications for different cities and natural regions. As a starting point the concept has been applied on the region in the east of Munich, yet could be extended arbitrarily. Photographs were taken and enjoyable stories about the meaning and development of the natural regions and features of the landscape were collected.

Design concept

The design concept was inspired by the topic itself. The visual design is based on a mathematical system, the Fibonacci sequence, which often appears within the process of growth in nature. The ratio of the numbers converges to the golden ratio for large numbers. Splitting any area (of which side lengths are subsequent Fibonacci numbers) repeatedly with the golden ratio on the long edge results in a tiling into squares. This concept was used for the layout of the project in order to obtain different information levels. Also the logo was developed through the simplification of a Fibonacci helix.

Impressive characteristics of the nature can be found nearly everywhere. Often unnoticed directly in front of the door, not only far away. Few people know, how nature and math are related.
